Airline Industry Problem

Due to increasing population, airlines are requiring rigorous restrictions on luggage size and weight. Many airlines are standardizing carry-on sizes to prevent shortages of overhead compartment space and finding ways to improve airport baggage traffic.

Design Approach

The cylindrical architecture of airplanes that is crucial for better aerodynamics requires lots of object customization, therefore can cause lots of dead space. Deep inside the overhead compartment, in between the curved wall and the carry-on storing area, there is a dead space that is too small to store an extra bag but big enough to squeeze in small packages and jackets. Svelte carry-on has a giant radius on one corner that fits into the dead space of the overhead compartment while providing additional storage in the carry-on.

Aesthetics Approach

The giant radius on Svelte replicates the inner curve of the overhead compartment, which is the outcome of the plane's cylindrical fuselage. The angle of the curve might vary depending on the size of the airplane, therefore this concept could be proposed to a specific airline or for a specific aircraft, even for specific people like the VIPs or flight attendants, or use it for the airline private storing system.

Svelte has a 90° rotated orientation with the narrow side being parallel with the retractable handle to help passengers to maneuver with ease when walking through the airplane narrow pathways. Two front wheels allow to rotate 360° for better maneuver and two rear wheels are fixed to support stability. With the consideration on how people will lift and carry the carry-on, 3 non-retractable handles are arranged on the top, front, and bottom. The top non-retractable handle is used when it is lifted vertically, the front handle is used when it is lifted horizontally, and the bottom handle is used when lifting it in and out from the overhead compartment. Moreover, grooved surface on the back of the carry-on where touches the bottom of the overhead compartment, helps it to slide in and out smoothly from the overhead compartment.

The structure is made of polycarbonate hard case and it is wrapped over with waterproof urethane coated nylon. The pocket on one side opens wide and the two pockets on another side stores laptop and small items like wallet and passport that need to be easily accessible.
